Rototilling for the Vegetable Garden

Some things to think about before tilling your garden

Many gardeners rototill their vegetable gardens every year out of habit, thinking that it's necessary. Others may avoid tilling so they don't disturb the soil structure and minimize erosion. Tilling can be necessary to break up compacted soils that lack organic material, especially when installing a new vegetable garden. For more information about Frequent tillage and its impact on soil quality checkout the link from Iowa State University. We do offer a basic soil analysis with our rototilling service, but it is a good idea to get your soil tested before tilling, so that all of the necessary soil amendments can be added to improve the soil health and plant growth. This can be done through UConn's Soil Nutrient Analysis Laboratory

For some great alternatives to rototilling The University of New Hampshire suggests Low and No-Till Gardening, Proven tips and solutions for reducing tillage in the home garden.
