Peas are a podded cool season crop that are most commonly green, and can be low growing or vining types. There are many varieties of peas, but we prefer to grow snap peas, snow peas, and especially, sugar snap peas for fresh eating. The fresh sugar snap peas are so tasty, they typically do not even make it out of the garden most days. Peas are a staple that are grown in The Itty Bitty Garden in both spring and the fall. If you have never tasted peas fresh out of the garden, you should definitely try growing some peas in your vegetable garden, you will not regret it.
Peas like a well draining fertile soil mixed with compost & aged manure. Peas produce best in full sun but they can tolerate some shade. Sow peas 4 - 6 weeks before last frost, 1" (2.5cm) deep, and 2" (5cm) apart. Make sure to have a trellis of some kind of support in place before sowing peas unless the are a low growing variety.
