Onions are a crop that has been cultivated for a really long time, many researchers believe it could be 7000 years or more. Yes, onions do make you cry. The sulfuric compounds of the onion are what causes your eyes to tear up, but they are tears of joy, because this tasty bulb is a versatile and wonderful addition to so many dishes. They are so popular that almost 7 billion pounds of onions are produced in the U.S. annually.
Our preferred way to grow onions in The Itty Bitty Garden is to purchase and plant onion sets, but onions can be grown from seed. In a location that is in full sun, start by preparing the beds of loose well drained soil with aged manure and compost. Sow the sets at a depth of 1" (2.5cm) spaced 3-4" (7.5-10cm) apart. Discard any onion sets that are soft and mushy.
