Kohlrabi or sometimes called the German turnip originated from northwestern Europe. It is part of the brassica family of plants, and the taste of kohlrabi has been described as similar to broccoli stems but sweeter and milder. Kohlrabi can be eaten raw or cooked, is a good source of fiber, and vitamin C. This is a fast growing and easy to cultivate vegetable for the garden, so try growing Kohlrabi in your vegetable garden.
Kohlrabi can be sown indoors or directly into the ground at a depth of 1/4-1/2" (6-13cm). Plant in moderate sun, well draining, fertile soil with a PH of around 6.0-7.0. Always harden off before transplanting outdoors. Avoid planting in a spot where Brassicas have been grown in the previous couple of years. Water about 1" (2.5cm) per week and harvest when stems are around 2" (5cm) in diameter.
