Okra or also known as ladies fingers, is a plant that can grow from 3 -6' tall. It is a heat loving plant that originates from warmer climates. The pods of the okra plant should be harvested when immature, around 2 - 3" long or they can be tough. The pods are mucilaginous or slimy, but cooking in acidic foods like tomatoes can help eliminate this. Okra is a popular ingredient in African, South American, the Southern U.S., and Middle Eastern cuisine.
Direct sow okra when soil temperatures are 75°F (24°C) and above. In well drained soil that has been amended with some compost or well rotted manure. Space okra plants 12" (30cm) apart in a spot with full sun. Water about 1" (2.5cm) per week.
